A CHARITY WALK? ITíS JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED\n\nTAKING PART in a picturesque fundraising walk in Ripon this September is just what the doctor ordered.

Retired local GP Dr Derek Jeary is one of the first people to register for Saint Michaelís Sunrise Walk, an event which will raise money for the charity that provides specialised care for people living with terminal illness and bereavement in Ripon.

Dr Jeary, who practised in the city until 2003, took part in the inaugural Sunrise Walk last year and was quick off the mark to register again for the 2011 event, which will take place on Sunday September 18.

The Sunrise Walk takes in the full beauty of Ripon in a six mile sponsored walk that is open to all ages and abilities.

One in two people in the Harrogate district are directly affected by the work of Saint Michaelís, and although Dr Jeary is not one of these people he remains passionate about the impact the charity has in Ripon.

He said: ďThe Sunrise Walk is a wonderful way of supporting a charity that is part of life in the area and I hope we have a great response from the community again this year.
ďThrough my work as a GP I referred many patients to Saint Michaelís and have witnessed the dramatic impact it has had on raising the standard of end of life care in Ripon, not just at the hospice itself but across the board.

ďIt is more important than ever now to support Saint Michaelís as our needs as a community become greater and more complex. We must enable Saint Michaelís to evolve so it can support those in Ripon who need it most.

ďThe Sunrise Walk brings together the Ripon community and last year it was wonderful to meet people in a beautiful setting who are equally motivated to make a difference to Saint Michaelís and the families amongst us who benefit from its work.Ē

Dr Jeary, 63, the newly appointed president of the Ripon Rotary Club, will be walking with wife Catherine and friends from local fundraising and community groups.

Saint Michaelís Chief Executive, Tony Collins, said: ďThe event was a big success last year and weíre hoping for more of the same this time. We hope the Ripon community will come out in force once again in support of families living with terminal illness and bereavement in the area.Ē

Leaving Sawley Village Hall as the sun starts to rise, participants will follow a six mile route that takes in the stunning sights of Ripon and its surrounding areas including Studley Deer Park and Fountains Hall.

The route ends at Ripon Cathedral where walkers can treat themselves to a celebratory breakfast.

It costs just £9 to register and organisers are hoping that participants will raise as much as possible through personal sponsorship.

Saint Michaelís currently needs £3.9million to maintain current service levels.

More than 80 per cent of these funds must be raised through support from the communities it serves, its own fundraising initiatives and events such as the Sunrise Walk.

Saint Michaelís Sunrise Walk is supported by Eura Audit UK, the local accountants and business advisors that has served businesses in Ripon and the surrounding areas since 1939.

Also, supporters are able to text their donations for the Sunrise Walk by sending the code SUNW11 and the donation amount to 70070. The donation will be received by Saint Michaelís in full and taxpayers can also add a further 25 per cent in Government-funded Gift Aid.

For further information about the event or to pick up a registration form call into Saint Michaelís shop at 6 North Street, Ripon or contact Saint Michaelís on (01423) 879 687 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.
